A lot of people find it to be macabre and weird, but I wanted this to be a whimsical spin on the tale of Medusa. In this depiction, she places her decapitated head down to give it a rest – and we see the head’s eyes closed in peaceful, unbothered repose. Where her head was, there is a rose, or at least what looks like one. Perhaps it’s still the wound from where she was cut down, but that's not stopping her. If anything, she’s taking that symbol of pain and crowning herself with it, re-writing the narrative of what it means to be wounded. And of course, she has a snake for her arm, paying homage to the snake hair in the classic tale. But to think of her as a small side character is to misunderstand what she represents. She is truly instrumental to the success of the men around her and has captured the imagination of many for centuries. I won’t tell you what symbols I’ve put here and why. It’s messy - a true sketch - but it really conveys a strong feeling to the viewer. I started with the shape of her hair first, simply because it was a shape I liked, and afterwards I attached a human body to it. At the time, I had a black marker that was beginning to dry out, and it made for a very innovative way to add hair on to the body.
