This print differs from my other work in that it is a watercolor piece, not my usual marker work. When I look at this piece, I think of classical female symbols of freedom, victory, and pride. When I see the pattern on the dress, I think of the floral patterns that adorn so many of the styles in Hawaii, a place I was lucky enough to live in during my time in the U.S. Air Force. In Hawaii, the relationship with the military is complicated, and many Hawaiians feel the weight of American colonialism. I call this piece “Pacific Liberty,” because I wonder when, if ever, the people of Hawaii will see the green-bronzed Statue of Liberty as their own symbol of freedom.
5 x 7 in, cold press paper. Each print is signed and dated before being individually wrapped in a protective plastic sleeve with a foam board backing.
